Petruchio

Petruchio is a rude, selfish man whose only concern in life is how he is going to make a profit and get richer. Petruchio is faced with the challenge of pursuing Katherine as his wife. He is told by numerous people how rude and unfriendly she is, but he continues the pursuit because he is promised money if he completes the task. Petruchio also sees women as just a figure position. He thinks women are just there to take care of the men and the children and complete household duties. Without Petruchio there would be no hope for Bianca and the men who want to marry Bianca. Petruchio takes on the task of wedding Katherine, so Bianca can finally become somebody's wife. Petruchio moves the play forward by doing the unthinkable and taming the shrew.

Don't forget Petruchio is also a man who likes a challenge, he especially likes to win. Katherine is a challenge for him, particularly appealing because no other man can handle her. Petruchio does play an important role helping the play move forward, his role as Katerine's wooer is very important.

I agree with you that Petruchio is a mean and somewhat twisted individual. However, I agree more with Jeanne that he is there for the challenge. He wants to conquer Katherine and get the money that has been promised him. He moves the play forward in the fact that without him there would be no wedding for Katherine and, by association, no wedding for Bianca.

I agree that petruchio is a rude charatcer not only for that fact that he only wanted kathrine for her money but also how he treated her. He tried starving her etc. how does that show love? his intentions where not good from the beginning so i dont see him as a good character who cares in the least bit about anybody but himself.

I think Petruchio just likes to mess around with life, treating relationships and wedding days with an arbitrary nature...although I don't condone starving your wife...

haha, really harsh analysis on Petruchio. I don't think he is just rude selfish man whose only concern in life is how he is going to make a profit and get richer. Petruchio married with Katharine and no man was able to take on her before him. He also liked challenges and play games with his friends. And yet he always won. I see Petruchio as winner. He got married, richer, and won the challenges (among friends) . I really think he is not just fooling around with her but loves Katharine because even thoug he was mean right after they got married, he tamed her and having fine marriage life with her. In a sense, he tamed her as lovely women(shakespearian age standard) and now she is considered as 'Good Wife', because of Petruchio.
