Sympathy
In The Metamorphosis, Kafka wants the reader to sympathize with the main character, Gregor. Gregor transforms into a bug, possibly a roach, and is ultimately rejected by his family. I believe that Kafka used the transformation to symbolize people who have physical or mental abnormalities. People tend to reject others with certain abnormalities because they are scared of something or someone being different. Kafka is presenting this message to us by changing the way Gregor looks. Gregor is still the same caring, helpful person as before, the only thing that has changed is his appearance. Kafka is telling the reader to not judge a book by its cover. Just because someone looks a certain way doesn't mean they are a bad or undesirable person to be around. The author wants us to sympathize with all people persecuted for the way they look, nit just Gregor. Kafka is trying to change the way we look at people.

I agree that people do tend to reject others that are abnormal or just different from the majority of people. Gregor only changed his physical form, but he is still the same on the inside. I like how you used the phrase "do not judge a book by its cover," the phrase seems to fit perfectly.
I completely agree with you that Kafka is trying to open the perspective of the society on how they look at people. "You can't judge a book by it's cover."
I agree that Kafka wants us to sympathize with Gregor. Through Gregor's transformation into a bug and the struggles he have to deal makes the reader pity him. When he turned into a bug he is all alone because to his family he is no longer Gregor, but a "creature" that is unwelcome in their home.
i agree that kafka wants us to side with gregor so we can look past phyisical appearances.
Kafka is definitely trying to expose the mistreatment of others. I also feel he is trying to expose and investigate the family unit and how relationships with it in work.
